Dowsing rods have featured heavily in the past in many areas of the paranormal. They have been used for finding energy and water supplies, and they're also used as an effective means of communicating with spirit. During past investigations the rods have given answers to questions that have been asked to spirit which have been subsequantly verified as historical fact. Exactly how dowsing rods work are debatable although it's believed that they work as an extension to the users own sensitive abilities, and are a method of being able to channel this into a much easier form of communication.
